What Is A Wellness Exam
Do you think routine care insurance is worth it (also wondering about minimal vaccinating)?
Here’s what I’m planning on having done every year:
- Wellness exam
- Fecal
- Heartworm test
- Dental cleaning
- Titer (maybe a vaccine that the antibodies are low on? I’m not really sure how that works…should I only do DHLPP, bordetella, and rabies, or are others really important, too?)
- Rabies every 3 years
Do you think insurance for this routine care would be worth it?
Vaccines have been proven to stay in a dogs system longer than you’d expect, so vaccinating yearly would be like overdosing. The recommendation now is even every 3 years. I did forget to mention Heartgard & Frontline, though, but I think my local pet store actually has them for cheaper prices.
My dog is currently UTD on all shots & preventatives/repellents, but I do not feel like he needs to get every vaccine every year (waste of my money & possible overdose), which is why I’m having Titers done.
A dental cleaning isn’t necessary to have every year, if you give your dog raw bones to chew on. I feed my dog a prey model raw diet and I have never had to have his teeth cleaned. If you don’t feed raw, then brush your dog’s teeth at least once a week. Then you can save the money and save putting your dog through the risk of anethesia.
Once a puppy has finished its vaccines at 12 months of age, I don’t suggest ever doing anymore vaccines, other than rabies every three years, again. I am a big proponent of minimal vaccination!
Unless your dog has a serious medical condition, I don’t think pet insurance is worth it. It is expensive and they do not cover everything.
