Wellness Small Breed Dog Food
When you see a food that is designed for small breeds, what is considered a small breed?
I have two dogs which I think are small. A mini dachshund who is 9 lbs and a cocker spaniel who is 21 lbs. Would you consider my cocker (who is smaller than most cockers) to be a small breed or a medium breed? And, would you feed her something different than what I am feeding to my mini dachshund? (she is eating Wellness Small Breed)
I think most small breed formulas are aimed at toy breed dogs. I have a 20lb Cavalier, I do not consider a “small breed” food appropriate for her. Small breed foods are generally designed with higher protein to compensate for small dogs energy needs. A 20lb dog simply doesn’t have the same metabolism as a 10lb dog. I would think you might have issues with your Cocker gaining weight on the SB formula, unless you cut back accordingly. When I’ve looked at small breed foods, the upper weight range on them always cuts off at 20lbs, I also think they is the extreme far end, and so prefer to feed a slightly larger dog like that a different food. Wellness Regular formulas would be fine. If she prefers the small kibbles, try Innova Small Bites, which is the same as the regular formula, just in smaller kibbles. Eagle Pack Holistics Chicken formula (along with duck, Lamb or Fish) also have small kibble size and are suitable for small and medium breeds.
I work in the industry, and only ever reccomend Small Breed formulas to customers with truly toy sized dogs, thats where the benefit of these foods is, your larger dog would do better on a regular food. -Neb
