Wellness Just For Puppy Review

My puppy does not like Wellness puppy food, why?

My new puppy Maltese is 3 months old and had him at my place for one week now and bought him Wellness puppy food for I have read good reviews on it. However, for some reason he does not like eating it! he now weighs about 2 pounds and the vet told me I should feed him about 1/2 cup daily but he barely eats that amount a day. I got worried and had him try Royal Canin…..and he loves it, finishes his food right away. Should I just keep feeding him Royal Canin? I thought this brand was one of the less quality dog food? Or is there a better premium quality food I should try with him which is similar to Royal Canin in taste puppys like?

Yes, I tried mixing Wellness and Royal Canin together….and yes, he ONLY eats Royal. I’m just worried he will starve himself.

If you base your choices of food on “what he likes the taste of” then you’ll be stuck with junk. Sort of like if you let a kid choose between a cookie and a carrot – the kid would choose what tastes good.

Like with children, in dog ownership it isn’t about what tastes appealing but what is healthy.

Royal Canin is NOT healthy. Example (MINI Puppy 33 Formula):

Chicken meal, brown rice, chicken, corn gluten meal, chicken fat, brewers rice, dried egg powder, natural chicken flavor, dried beet pulp (sugar removed), anchovy oil, brewer’s yeast, etc.

- Yes it has a meat meal as the first and a meat as a third ingredient. But it’s also got a grain in there. And corn. And brewers rice, more egg stuff, and beet pulp.

- Corn, most grains, brewers rice/yeast – none have adequate nutrition and the dog does not get anything from these sources. Low quality FILLERS is what they are.

Here are a few excerpts about certain ingredients (taken from a Boxer message board site):

“Within the first five ingredients we want to see at least two (preferably more) named meat sources, and as few grains as possible”

““Chicken” includes a high degree of water content, “chicken meal” does not – so with “chicken” it is quite possible that once the water content is removed, it may actually be the fourth or fifth ingredient…”

“Whole ground grains are far better than grain fragments (floor sweepings?) which typically have little or no nutritional value. Brown rice (a whole grain) is better than white rice, which has been stripped of about 75% of its nutritional value. Whole fruits and vegetables are better nutritional sources than grains.”

“Looking further down the list, we prefer not to see any corn products in the food (corn, corn meal, corn gluten meal, corn syrup, etc) as corn is very difficult to digest, of little nutritional value, and a very common allergen in boxers. Same goes for wheat products/fragments and for beet pulp or molasses (sugar). It should go without saying that we would never buy a food with any form of corn or wheat in the top five ingredients.”

I would stick with the Wellness and give it some time. Put the meals down, pick them up. Give the pup a few days to realize you AREN’T going to change the food again and the pup will eat. You can try moistening it with water (sometimes teething pups don’t like to crunch kibble) but don’t add anything (the dog may become dependent on what you add and pick out the kibble and not eat it.)
