Wellness Dry Cat Food Core
Which dry cat food should I be choosing?
I recently started a new job in a locally owned pet food store and until now, I knew nothing about the quality of these “supermarket brands”. Needless to say, I’ll never go back to 9Lives or Friskies again.
Now that I’m a little more aware, here’s where my questions come in. I’ve pretty much decided on Wellness. I’ve transitioned my cats over to the Wellness Complete Health Chicken dry food but after some thought, I was wondering if I should have changed to their Wellness Core variety. Again, I don’t know that much about feline nutrition and I was wondering if that big jump in protein really is that much more beneficial to them.
If it helps, I have an 11 old male cat and a 6 month old female kitten.
I’d also like to know if I’ve chosen the right brand. Other ones that we carry that I’ve been looking into are Solid Gold and Felidae.
Also, I’d only like suggestions for their dry food. Canned food is another matter entirely. Thanks in advance.
No dry food. Wet food only for all your cats. They will be healthier and happier. I hear all the time from cat owners about how wet food is too expensive, so they feed dry food to save money. But really, is it a savings when you end up with a cat with urinary tract infection, crystals, or blockage, that has to go to the vet time and again, or be hospitalized?
Spend your money on quality food and you will save on vet bills, on cat litter, and cats require less food if it is a good, grain-free wet food. It is nutritient-dense, which dry food is not. Even a great dry food like Wellness CORE, which is one of the very few grain-free dry foods around, lacks one very important nutrient all cats need: WATER!
Feed your kittens Wellness kitten food. It is higher in protein than the other Wellness formulas. Your adult cats can eat kitten food as well–it will not hurt them, as extra meat protein is a beneift to all cats. At some point when your kittens are older, if you wish to take away the kitten food, all cats could eat Wellness grain-free canned cat food.
Feed meals only, do not leave food out all the time. Wet food should be out for 30 minuts max, then remove any uneaten food. (My cat gobbles his up long before 30 minutes, but some cats like to nibble a bit, then return a few minutes later to nibble some more, so allow 30 minutes for them to finish.)
Science Diet is junk. Too much money goes into advertising, very little goes into the product itself.
