Wellness Dog Food Senior
What is a good SENIOR dog food for my Scottie?
I am very familiar with the food analysis website, and yes, I’ve compared labels on Wellness, Innova, & Chicken Soup.
My problem is that in all three of these foods, the grain content is significantly increased. Can anyone suggest a good senior dog food that isn’t all grain and has the omega 3/6 and glucosamine in it thats easy for my dog to eat?
Before anyone starts lecturing me on raw food… No, I’m not interested, but thanks.
My vet, who’s very well educated on dog nutrition – they sell Orijen and raw in her clinic – always tells people not to feed their older dogs senior dog food. People are now doing a lot more research into dog nutrition and modern vets are not recommending senior food any more because there’s just not enough nutrition in it, all those grains you’re talking about, and it makes a senior’s organs have to work much harder (kidneys, e.g.)
And the glucosamine and omega 3/6? The amount in the food isn’t even close to being enough to make a difference, and its processed besides.
You’d be better off keeping your dog on whatever he’s on now, giving him a glucosamine chondroitin capsule, as well as salmon oil or omega 3 capsule daily. My son’s beagle weighs 25 pounds and the vet recommended 500 mg daily for his joint problems.
