Weight Loss Zone Heart Rate
heart beat rate and running question?
i tend to have a fast heartbeat. i have a resting heartrate of about 85. when i run, i get into the 170′s within minutes. the ‘target zone’ where the run is actually beneficial is 130-150. i can get well into that range simply walking.
SO. my question is: is walking just as beneficial as running in my case?
im NOT that overweight. 5’5 1/2″ and 145 pounds.
also, if i can only fit running in twice a week for about three miles, will that get me anywhere (as far as weight loss is concerned)
Based on the laws of physics and common sense, running/jogging at an easy pace is about 20% better than a brisk walk. E.g. If you walk 3 miles in 1 hour you will burn 400 calories. If you run 3 miles in 30 minutes you will burn 480 calories. BUT walking helps you to build your baseline aerobic endurance and allows you to clearly define zone 1 and mid zone 2.
FIRST you need to determine what your real zones are.
1) Resting heart rate is your heart rate when you first wake up in the morning.
2) A rough estimate of maximum heart rate is 220-age.
3) As you get into exercise and become more fit your resting heart rate will start to decline gradually.
Based on RPE 1-10 — 1 being a very easy walk and 10 being exhaustion within seconds (e.g. finding your max during weight lifting or a 100M sprint)…
RPE 1-4 is a pace you can maintain for a couple of hours (Zone 1-2).
RPE 5-7 is a pace you can maintain for 60-90 minutes (Zone 2-3)
RPE 8 is a pace you can maintain for about 30-45 minutes (Zone 4)
REP 9 is a pace you can maintain for 2-5 minutes (Zone 5a-5b)
RPE 10 is a pace measured in SECONDS. (Zone 5c) MAX Heart rate.
