How effective is Zumba?

I have just started doing Zumba and LOVING IT!!
However, I just wondered how effective it is compared to my old, boring gym routine which consisted of pounding the treadmill and doing weights.
I know its a difficult question to answer as it obviously depends on how much you put into the workout. I do the DVD’s at home, and even though at the end of the Zumba sessions, I am dripping with sweat and have to peel my gym clothes off, I dont actually feel like I have exercised! I dont ache the day after either.
I am seriously considering cancelling my gym membership as I hated going to the gym, but I wont if just doing Zumba does not give me the same benefits for weight loss and fat burning as the gym.
I only do Zumba DVDs at home. For 5 months I did the Total Body Transformation, and now I do the Zumba Exhilarate. Since January I have lost 20 pounds and incredible inches off every part of my body. I’m 52 years old and my weight is now the lowest it has been since I was a young teenager!
You don’t have to ache after working out. You know you are burning a lot calories. I do Zumba 5-6 days a week and have never ached after doing Zumba and I have still lost weight and inches at a very healthy rate.
In my opinion, Zumba is very effective. I have tried a lot of different workout plans over the years. I did not achieve the results I have gotten with Zumba with any of the other ones I’ve tried. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that Zumba is enjoyable to do. I am a person who absolutely hates to exercise and if I did it 3 days a week for more than a month, that was a miracle. Zumba is the only exercise program that is actually fun to do and I look forward to working out rather than having to try to talk myself into it and losing the battle. For the first time in my life, I actually feel guilty if I have to skip a day. Never in my wildest dreams would I think that I would be a person that would feel guilty over not working out. And since it is fun to do, I put everything I’ve got into it, rather than just struggling to get it finished. When my husband asks me how my workout was when I’m done, I tell him “I kicked butt today”.
