Does anyone else feed a BARF diet to their pets need some info???

I have been looking in to (and starting the dog) feed a barf diet to my dogs and cats…my dogs have always gotten raw soup bones and pig ears. and they get most table scraps, mixed with kibble…
however after we lost our male cat at the young age of 4 to a bladder blockage…i have been looking in to feeding our other male and new female cat a raw diet…the vet told me that indoor fixed male cats get it more often then say a fixed male barn cat would. my mother also loss her indoor unaltered male cat a week before we lost ours(same food fed). So the more i looked the more i belamed the food companies that claim they care.
also the male cat is VERY over weight. and the dogs are chunky…but they get lots od exersize….so lite diets would be helpful.

You will pretty much be doing TWO diets as the dog one if not right for cats. Dogs are much easier to feed a wholesome, natural meat diet because the meat can be cooked and they can eat the vegetables (potatoes, carrots, beans, etc) that people eat.

There are Yahoo groups for both cats and dogs about BARF. Cat groups are: naturalCATS, RawPaws, rawKatz. I don’t have dogs and a search will find groups for you. Be joining and reading posts you will become aware of the issues people face with the raw food and it is a great way to “educate” yourself about it.

Dogs “convert” easily to the raw diets. Cats can be more difficult as they get fixated on the food they were weaned on and with give you a royal standoff when you try to change them.

That said, my cats did and I persevered. I use the Feline Instincts powder mixed into ground raw organic chicken and ground raw organic turkey with liver and heart from each species (turkey with turkey, chicken with chicken).

You can go to www.felineinstincts.com and ask Felice to send you a brochure. That gives you the contents of the powder and how to go about making the food. You don’t have to use that at all if you don’t want and it will give you an idea of what is needed for the cats’ diet.
