Physical Wellness Examination
My three-year-old maltese liver enzymes are elevated, how can I help him?
I got a call from my vet yesterday re: my dog’s liver enzymes. Everything else is excellent with the wellness test. She’d like to retest him in 6 weeks, and I’m scared.
She believes that my dog could have been in contact with a toxic.
What can I do to help detox my dog: I feed only grain free foods (currently CORE Fish formula), and for treats hollistic cookies. He did have some “Milkbones” and a “Rawhide bone” in the last three weeks (stupid gift, I’d have never bought that).
Note: there are no changes in my dog’s behaviour, level of activity, appetite (very good for a small dog), or elimination patterns, or physical examination. I’m shocked.
Please give me some practical advise to help my dog.
The liver is a remarkable organ. It can heal itself within certain limits. This is why your vet wants to retest in 6 weeks.
I have a breed that can have an abnormal liver enzyme–the alkaline phosphatase level. I’ve used two supplements with success, Denosyl and Denamarin. Milk thistle and SAM-e can work to heal the liver. Denamarin contains both. I’m including links about the supplements for your research. Obviously, you would want to discuss any supplement with your vet first. It may be that your dog’s enzymes haven’t reached the point of needing any treatment.
My dog with bacterial hepatitis (she had many health issues by the time this happened) was given the Denamarin. Her liver enzymes were in 1,800 and 2,000 level. In 6 weeks they dropped to 1,000 and 1,200. I have no long-term results because she passed from kidney failure.
You do want to watch for any yellowing of the eyes or gums, vomiting bile or anorexia. Good luck.
