Holistic Nutrition help?

Does anyone know anything about holistic nutrition? I’m looking to revamp my whole diet and way of life and to increase my health and wellness… Can anyone help me or direct me to someone who can? I am in my twenties, am 5’5 and 130 pounds, if any of that is relevant. Thanks!!

This takes a lot of work, and the best way to go is to both get help and help yourself. This means that because no one knows your body like yourself, you should educate yourself on nutrition to know what your body needs. The best place to start is “Nutrition for Dummies” which has a good basis for the foundations of nutrition. You can get it used inexpensively–check places like Dealoz.com. Another book that can help you understand your needs and body is “The Omnivores Dilemma.” These are good places to start.

As far as others helping you, you’ve got several sources. A great online source is MyPyramid.gov, which has a pyramid tracker that is great for helping you get all the servings of different food groups, vitamins, and minerals. Using this steadily will teach you patterns in eating and help you better understand what portions contain. You need to be good about using it for it to be any help though. You can also speak to your doctor, but often only nutritionists are really concerned about in depth details of your eating habits.

Another word of advice–what’s healthy for others isn’t always healthy for you. A lot of diet fads can really back fire–there are hypotheses out there that improperly prepared whole grains could be responsible for some of the digestive disorders people are experiencing. Although health foods are more expensive, make sure you get the real deal, or you could be hurting yourself. Also, I had always heard that salt was horrible for your body and I took my daily intake down to the nationally suggested average. I then started passing out repeatedly. Apparently I have hypo-tension (opposite of high blood pressure) and I need excess electrolytes to maintain consciousness. This isn’t to scare you–revamping your diet sounds great and you sound healthy. It’s just a reminder to listen to your body–after all, your body is the one you’re trying to help!
