Gluten intolerance?
I think I have a gluten intolerance.. only in the last few months I have been getting extremely bloated after eating carbs rich in wheat.. Is there a test to see if its an intolerance?
Also, I know gluten free diets are expensive… and do they lead to weight loss? Because I don’t necessarily want that! I have a lot of muscle I want to keep around..

There are tests, but as they are generally testing for celiac, AND you have to eat a normal gluten-full diet for the previous several weeks for them to work AND there is a form of celiac which does not show up in the tests (it’s called “asymptomatic” celiac, although you still get symptoms – just none that can be tested directly), it’s doubtful how useful a *negative* result is.
Celiac forums are full of people who tested negative and/or were misdiagnosed with ibs, but are definitely suffering from gluten intolerance, in that when they get “glutened” without realising it, they get all the terrible symptoms they were getting before they cut it out. This is often the only way they know the meal they went out for (or whatever) contained gluten.
A gluten free diet doesn’t need to be ridiculously expensive, so long as you don’t try and substitute absolutely like for like. Many of the gluten-free versions of things are pretty disgusting anyway, so you are better just changing what you eat.
What I mean is, gluten free bread is at least 6 times the price of normal bread, and tastes like dry, crumbly and tasteless cake. Personally, I just leave it out and eat Corn Thins instead, which are yummy, and not expensive at all. To substitute for toast with eggs and stuff, I use potatoes as fries, rosti or baked in their skins.
A gluten free diet may well lead to weight loss, but only in certain circumstances (and it’s unlikely to be severe enough to lead to muscle loss). Partly this is because some people’s body reacts to gluten (when not digested properly) by demanding more food, resulting in overeating – and this is made worse if the food chosen to eat at this point also contains gluten – bit of a vicious circle going there. So anybody who has had this sort of thing going on will often find that after cutting out gluten their appetite reduces, because they are absorbing all the food they eat, and since they start eating less will therefore lose weight.
Another possible reason for weight loss is that in the beginning, many people don’t find sufficient carb sources to replace their previous gluten-rich intake, so you get the same sort of effect as a South Beach or Atkins diet. As the diet settles down, this will go away (and low carb diets are only effective for around 6 months anyway).
As I’ve said, you can substitute with carbs like potatoes, rice (brown rice has more nutrients), buckwheat, quinoa and plenty of fresh and dried fruit, including bananas. For snacks, you can select stuff from Asian stores like Bombay or balti mix (based on chick pea/gram/besan flour) or Japanese rice crackers, as well as dried fruit and nut mixes. There are also some really quite acceptable (but generally expensive) cakes and cookies available as well (at least in the UK, but we can’t be unique) – and if you tolerate oats, there’s always flapjacks. If you cook, you can make macaroons with almonds or coconut, which are yummy.
